Find Payment Providers for Your Vape Business

Vape shops and e-liquid brands can take card payments online when they are matched with a provider whose policy covers nicotine products. Most mainstream processors restrict or ban vapes, but specialist acquirers board compliant vape merchants. What decides the outcome is age verification that works, products that are legal in every market you sell to, and a site that follows advertising rules.

Why vape merchants are hard to place

  • Mainstream processors restrict vapes. Stripe's UK list, for example, treats tobacco, e-cigarettes and e-liquid as restricted and, in the US, allows only products authorised by the FDA.
  • Card-not-present tobacco sales across borders are a Tier 3 category in Visa's Integrity Risk Program, and Mastercard runs a registration program for tobacco merchants, so the acquirer needs the right scheme setup before it can board you.
  • Age checks are the core risk. Selling to a minor is illegal in the UK and US, and a weak age gate at checkout can end an account on its own.
  • The rules are changing quickly in both the UK and the US, and every change can shift an acquirer's appetite.

What to consider when choosing a PSP or acquirer

Know what the UK Tobacco and Vapes Act changes

The Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 received Royal Assent on 29 April 2026. It creates a generational ban on selling tobacco to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009, starting 1 January 2027, and enables a retail licensing scheme for tobacco and vapes. The government intends to ban vape and nicotine product advertising and sponsorship, including online and on social media, from 1 June 2027, while still allowing factual product information on retail sites. Expect acquirers to ask how you will comply.

Single-use vapes are already gone in the UK

Single-use vapes have been banned from sale in the UK since 1 June 2025. Underwriters check product ranges against this, so a UK site that still lists disposable devices, even as clearance stock, is likely to fail review.

Make age verification real

A tick box that says 'I am over 18' is not enough for most acquirers. Expect to show an online age check at checkout, such as a database or document check, and age verification on delivery. Record the checks so you can show them in an audit, because a single test purchase by trading standards can decide the future of the account.

Sell only compliant products

UK vape products must be notified to the MHRA and meet limits on tank size, nicotine strength and refill containers. In the US, the FDA requires marketing authorisation for e-cigarettes, and few products have it. Acquirers commonly ask for your notification or authorisation records and check that the products on your site match them.

Plan cross-border sales carefully

Shipping nicotine products across borders brings tax, labelling and import rules for each destination, and some countries ban e-cigarettes altogether. In the US, the PACT Act covers online sales of e-cigarettes, including registration, age verification on delivery and state tax obligations. Tell the acquirer exactly where you ship, and block the rest at checkout.

Keep marketing in line with the rules

Influencer posts, discount codes aimed at young audiences, flavour names and imagery that appeal to children all count against you. Acquirers look at your social media and affiliate pages as well as the store, so keep everything in line with the advertising rules in each market.

Provider suitability differs from business to business: two companies in the same industry can receive opposite answers because of licence, market mix, ticket size or dispute history. We do not state that a provider accepts an industry unless that provider has confirmed it, and no one can guarantee approval.

Check which routes may fit your business

Provider fit in Vape and E-Cigarettes depends on more than the industry itself: licence, markets, volume and dispute history all change the answer. Answer a few quick questions to start checking your own situation.

Common questions about Vape and E-Cigarettes payments

Can a vape shop accept card payments online?

Yes. Vape merchants process cards through acquirers whose policy covers nicotine products, and the account is underwritten for that from the start. Approval and final terms are always the provider's decision.

Is vaping a high-risk industry for payment processing?

Yes. Age-restricted products, fast-changing rules, cross-border tax and scheme registration requirements make acquirers treat vape merchants as high risk. That usually means more documents and checks at onboarding, and sometimes a rolling reserve.

Does Stripe allow vape products?

Stripe's restricted business list for the UK, updated September 2026, lists tobacco, e-cigarettes and e-liquid as restricted, which means they need Stripe's approval, and in the US it accepts only products authorised by the FDA. Check Stripe's current list for your own country.

What does the UK Tobacco and Vapes Act mean for online vape stores?

The Act received Royal Assent on 29 April 2026. It enables a licensing scheme for tobacco and vape retailers and powers to restrict flavours, packaging and displays, and the government intends vape advertising and sponsorship to be banned, including online, from 1 June 2027. Retail sites can still give factual product information. Follow the government's guidance as each part comes into force.

What age verification do payment providers expect?

Usually an online age check before or at checkout, such as a database or ID check, and a delivery service that checks age on handover. A self-declared date of birth on its own is rarely accepted for nicotine products.

Can I sell vapes to customers in other countries?

Only where the products are legal and you meet local tax and labelling rules. Some countries ban e-cigarettes entirely, and the US has its own federal and state rules for online sales. Your acquirer will want to know every market you ship to.

Why was my vape store's payment account closed?

Common reasons are that vapes were not declared at signup, products on the site that are not allowed, such as disposables in the UK, missing or weak age verification, and shipping to markets the provider does not accept.
