Find Payment Providers for Your Tech Support Business

Legitimate tech support businesses, from IT help desks to computer repair and software support plans, can take card payments when they are matched with a provider that accepts the category. Scams have made underwriters careful, so what decides the outcome is how you find customers, how you price and how easily customers can cancel and get refunds.

What providers look at for tech support

  • Tech support scams have shaped how the whole category is seen. Fake security pop-ups, cold calls and remote access sold for unnecessary repairs have led to repeated FTC actions, from Operation Tech Trap in May 2017 to a USD 26 million settlement with Restoro and Reimage in March 2024.
  • Payment companies have been held responsible too. In June 2025, the payment processor Paddle agreed to pay USD 5 million to settle FTC allegations that it processed payments for tech support schemes, and was banned from processing for tech support merchants that use telemarketing or pop-ups about computer security or performance.
  • Stripe's prohibited business list includes suspicious remote technical support, so a legitimate business can still be reviewed closely if its marketing looks similar.
  • Customers who feel pressured, or who do not see their problem fixed, dispute charges, so chargebacks and refunds are the main risk an acquirer prices for.

What to consider when choosing a PSP or acquirer

Follow the Telemarketing Sales Rule

Since 9 January 2025, the FTC's Telemarketing Sales Rule covers inbound calls to tech support services, including calls made in response to ads, emails or direct mail. A technical support service means any plan, program, software or service marketed to repair, maintain or improve the performance or security of a device that runs code. If customers reach you by phone, your scripts, disclosures and records have to meet the rule, and acquirers ask how calls are handled.

Show how customers find you

The fastest way to a decline is marketing that looks like a scam: pop-ups warning of infections, unsolicited calls or ads that impersonate a well-known brand. Describe your lead sources plainly, such as search, referrals, business contracts or your own customer base, and make sure affiliates follow the same rules.

Make pricing and remote access transparent

Publish what each service costs before the customer pays, explain what you will do on their device and get clear consent before connecting remotely. Underwriters compare your website, call scripts and receipts, so they should all say the same thing.

Keep subscriptions and refunds simple

Support plans are often subscriptions, so card scheme subscription rules apply: clear terms at sign-up, a receipt after each charge, notice before renewals and easy online cancellation. A fair refund policy for problems you could not fix keeps disputes low.

Use the right merchant category code

Tech support is usually processed under computer services or software codes, such as MCC 7379, Computer Maintenance, Repair and Services. The code must match what you actually sell, because miscoding is treated as a serious breach of card scheme rules.

Business customers are easier to board

IT support sold to businesses under written contracts, with invoices and named contacts, carries far less dispute risk than one-off consumer support sold by phone. If you serve both, show the split, since it changes how an acquirer sees the account.

Check which routes may fit your business

Provider fit in Tech Support depends on more than the industry itself: licence, markets, volume and dispute history all change the answer. Answer a few quick questions to start checking your own situation.

Common questions about Tech Support payments

Can a tech support business accept card payments?

Yes. Legitimate tech support businesses process cards through providers that accept the category, once they show how customers find them, clear pricing and a fair refund policy.

Why is tech support considered high risk?

Because of years of tech support scams and FTC enforcement, including action against a payment processor in 2025. Acquirers look closely at marketing, sales calls and dispute rates to tell legitimate businesses from scams.

Does Stripe accept tech support businesses?

Stripe's prohibited list includes suspicious remote technical support, updated September 2026. Legitimate tech support is not listed as prohibited, but accounts in the category can be reviewed closely.

Does the Telemarketing Sales Rule apply to my tech support business?

If customers call you by phone in the US, very likely. Since 9 January 2025, inbound calls to tech support services are covered by the rule, including calls prompted by ads or emails.

Do Visa or Mastercard require registration for tech support?

Not as a category. Tech support is not on Visa's high-integrity-risk list or Mastercard's specialty merchant registration list, but the acquirer still underwrites it as higher risk.

Which MCC is used for tech support?

Usually a computer services or software code, such as MCC 7379 for computer maintenance, repair and services. The code must match what you sell.

How can a tech support business keep chargebacks low?

Publish prices, get clear consent before remote access, send written receipts, make subscriptions easy to cancel and refund customers whose problem you could not fix.
