Payment Processing for Crypto Casinos

A crypto casino can take card and fiat deposits next to crypto when it is matched with an acquirer whose gambling programme accepts its licence and markets. Most card providers are wary of the category, but licensed crypto casinos with clean player markets and proper wallet screening do get boarded. What decides the outcome is the licence, where your players are and how crypto and card money are kept apart.

What crypto casinos need for card payments

  • Two of the card schemes' highest-risk categories meet. Visa places gambling under MCC 7995 in Tier 1 of its Integrity Risk Program and crypto under MCC 6051 in Tier 2, and Mastercard registers gambling and crypto merchants in separate programmes.
  • Many crypto casinos hold an offshore licence and accept players from almost anywhere. Acquirers only process for countries they accept for your licence, so a broad player list is the most common reason for a decline.
  • Regulators link crypto to money laundering. The FATF's September 2026 report on gambling risks lists virtual asset deposits, mixing fiat and crypto, and withdrawals that do not match the player's location among its red flags.
  • Some markets ban crypto outright. Ontario does not allow it, Brazil bans it for betting, and Germany's payment rules rule it out in practice, so these players have to be blocked.

What to consider when choosing a PSP or acquirer

Card deposits must be processed as gambling

A card deposit at a casino is a gambling transaction and belongs under MCC 7995 with a registered gambling merchant, even if the player ends up playing in crypto. Routing card payments through a crypto purchase or on-ramp so that they look like something else is what the schemes call transaction laundering. It breaks scheme rules, and when it is found the account is closed and the merchant can end up on Mastercard's MATCH list. A properly coded gambling account is the only card setup that lasts.

Pick a licence that allows crypto

Acquirers look first at whether your regulator permits crypto at all. Curaçao allows it under its 2026 crypto policy, the Isle of Man allows it under licence conditions, and Great Britain allows it once the operator has assessed the risks and notified the Gambling Commission. In February 2026 the Commission said it was exploring a regulated route for crypto payments, with no change in policy yet. Anjouan-licensed casinos can be placed too, with a smaller group of acquirers, and a strong file on markets and controls matters most there.

Know Curaçao's crypto policy

The Curaçao Gaming Authority's crypto policy guideline from June 2026 lets licensees accept crypto for gambling only. Operators may not act as an exchange, payment provider or virtual asset service provider, deposits and withdrawals must be screened with blockchain analytics, and withdrawals go back to the same wallet in the same asset by default. Funds linked to mixers or sanctioned addresses are banned, and player, operational and treasury wallets must be kept apart. The rules phase in from September 2026 to June 2027.

Keep crypto and card money apart

Acquirers want to see that card deposits and crypto flows never mix: card money is withdrawn back to the card or a bank account in the player's name, crypto goes back to the wallet it came from. The Isle of Man forbids crypto in and fiat out, and fiat in and crypto out, because the operator would be acting as an exchange. Showing this separation in your cashier and your reconciliation is one of the strongest parts of an application.

EU players bring MiCA into it

Since the MiCA transition period ended on 1 July 2026, crypto-asset services for EU clients need MiCA authorisation, and the EU travel rule has applied to crypto transfers between regulated firms since 30 December 2024. A casino that only accepts crypto as payment does not automatically become a crypto-asset service provider, but its custody, exchange and payment partners must be authorised. Stablecoins that are not MiCA compliant have also been restricted on EU platforms since early 2025.

Expect closer checks on players

Crypto deposits are irreversible and card deposits can be charged back, so fraud often moves to the card side. Acquirers expect identity checks before the first withdrawal, controls on multiple accounts and on cards that do not match the player, and a watch on withdrawals to wallets in other countries than the player. Low chargeback and fraud rates on your existing card volume make the strongest case.

What a Crypto Casino payment setup is made of

A gambling acquirer for cards

Card deposits run through an acquirer with a gambling programme that accepts your licence and player markets under MCC 7995. It sets your limits, reserve and settlement, and it is the part of the setup most crypto casinos are missing.

A crypto payment gateway

Crypto deposits and withdrawals go through a crypto payment provider or your own wallets. Where EU players are involved, any partner that holds, exchanges or transfers crypto for you should be authorised under MiCA.

Blockchain analytics

Wallet screening and transaction monitoring for every crypto deposit and withdrawal, with risk scores and records you can show your regulator and your acquirer. Curaçao now requires it for all crypto-accepting licensees.

Local fiat methods and payouts

Bank transfers, open banking and e-wallets in the markets you serve, plus a payout route for card and bank withdrawals. Fiat payouts must go to an account in the player's name, separate from crypto withdrawals.

Crypto Casino payment methods by market

Curaçao: crypto allowed with controls

Crypto may be accepted for gambling under the June 2026 guideline, with blockchain analytics, same-wallet and same-asset withdrawals, segregated wallets and no exchange or custody services. Full compliance is due by June 2027.

Isle of Man: crypto in, crypto out

The GSC allows crypto through licence conditions. Crypto can be converted to fiat before play, or deposited and withdrawn in the same asset, but crypto in with fiat out, or a different asset out, is not allowed.

Great Britain: allowed after a risk assessment

Crypto is not banned, but the operator must assess its risks, update its AML risk assessment and report the new payment method to the Gambling Commission as a key event. Credit cards remain banned for gambling.

Ontario, Brazil and Germany: no crypto

Ontario's standards say cryptocurrency shall not be accepted, Brazil's Ordinance 615 bans crypto deposits for betting, and Germany requires payments through a regulated account in the player's name, which rules crypto out in practice.

Common questions about Crypto Casino payments

Can a crypto casino accept card payments?

Yes, if it holds a gambling licence and is boarded by an acquirer whose gambling programme accepts that licence and its player markets. Card deposits are processed as gambling under MCC 7995, separate from the crypto side.

Which licence is best for a crypto casino?

Acquirers look for a licence that allows crypto and that they already accept. Curaçao and the Isle of Man both allow crypto under their own rules, and Great Britain allows it after a risk assessment. Anjouan-licensed casinos can be placed as well, with a smaller group of acquirers that look closely at markets and controls.

Can I buy crypto with a card and use it to fund casino play?

Not as a way around gambling rules. A card payment that funds gambling must be processed as gambling under MCC 7995. Disguising it as a crypto purchase is transaction laundering under card scheme rules, and it is a common reason for closed accounts and MATCH listings.

What does Curaçao's crypto policy require?

The June 2026 guideline lets licensees accept crypto for gambling only, with blockchain analytics on every deposit and withdrawal, withdrawals to the same wallet in the same asset by default, segregated player wallets, and no exchange or custody services. It phases in from September 2026 to June 2027.

Where are crypto casinos not allowed to accept crypto?

Among regulated markets, Ontario does not allow cryptocurrency, Brazil bans crypto deposits for betting, and Germany's payment rules rule it out in practice. Many other countries ban online gambling that is not locally licensed, so acquirers expect those players to be blocked whatever the payment method.

Does a crypto casino need MiCA authorisation?

Accepting crypto as payment does not automatically make a casino a crypto-asset service provider, but serving EU clients with custody, exchange or transfer services does need authorisation, and since 1 July 2026 there is no transition period left. Make sure your crypto partners are authorised if you have EU players.

Why do acquirers decline crypto casinos?

The common reasons are a licence the acquirer does not accept, players in countries the acquirer cannot serve, card and crypto flows that are mixed, missing wallet screening, and card deposits that were previously processed under the wrong code.
